About the Artist and His WorkSeveral years ago I found a book by Judy Gale Roberts entitled Easy to Make Inlay Wood Projects: Intarsia.
My first project was a dolphin. I had a small bandsaw and a belt sander. The dolphin was rather crude but fun to make. Next I tried a raccoon. Halfway through that project I threw it away. After moving to the Olympic Peninsula I tried again. This time my raccoon came out rather well. Since that time I have made and sold over 200 art pieces and have a well equipped workshop. I am constantly on the lookout for just the right wood and the right wood grain and color for that "Special Project." I use Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock, Maple, Pine, Ebony, Poplar, Walnut, Cherry, Oak, Yellowheart and Ash (to name a few). I use no stains or dyes on my pieces. Each piece is coated with three coats of clear satin finish. No two art pieces are ever alike as I make each one individually. I make as many as a dozen of some and as few as two or three of others. When you own a piece made by myself you can be assured you have purchased a one-of-a-kind work of art. Sincerely, Doug Caldart |
